Levi Parsons Morton

Remarks: Levi Parsons Morton was the son of Rev. Daniel Oliver Morton, a congressional minister, and Lucretia (Parsons) Morton. He was the head of Morton, Grinnell, andCompany in New York. Mr. Morton founded the banking house of L. P. Morton & Company, before going into politics. After marrying Miss Anna Livingston Read Street in 1873, his second marriage. The couple had six children: He was elected to congress (1877-1880), and later appointed U.S. minister to France under President James Garfield (1881). Mr. Morton served as vice-president with President Benjamin Harrison (1888). He then became Govenor of New York (1895-1897).
