John Ludlow Morton

Remarks: John Ludlow was was the eldest son of General Jacob Morton and Catharine (Ludlow) Morton. He became a portrait, historical, and landscape painter. Morton, who lived in New York City from 1827 to 1860, was very active in the affairs of the National Academy of Design: he was secretary from 1828, and a full member in 1832. He served periodically as a member of the council and as a member of the committee of arrangments. His brothers Edmund and Henry Jackson Morton, with whom he lived in 1828, were also artists. John married his cousin, Maria Ludlow (1798-1825), in 1823; there were no children.
