Dolley Madison

Remarks: Dolley Payne was the daughter of John Payne and Mary (Coles) Payne of, North Carolina. Miss Payne married John Todd, Jr. (d. 1793), in Philadelphia. The couple had twin sons. In 1794, after the death of her husband, Mrs. Todd married James Madison, of Virginia. Mrs. Madison and her family moved to Washington, where she was socially prominent from 1801 until 1817. She was a friend to Thomas Jefferson and served as the White House Hostess, after the death of his wife. Her husband was later elected President and she was noted for her parties and personable attitude.
