Remarks: U. S. President in 1817 and served 2 terms; Best remembered for the Monroe Doctrine; Served in the Army during the American Revolution and was a member of the Continental Congress from 1783-1786; U.S. Senator to VA in 1790; Appointed Minister to France in 1794 by President George Washington; Govenor of VA from 1799-1802; Sent to France to negotiate the Louisiana Purchase in 1803; he served as Secretary of State from 1811-1816 before becoming U.S. President
