Thomas Luny
Date: English, 1759 - 1837
Remarks: Thomas Luny was born in London in 1759. He served for various periods in the British naval service, perhaps even as late as 1810. Although his beginnings in art are uncertain, he was probably a student of Francis Holman. In 1777 his first pictures were exhibited by the Society of Artists, and three years later at the Royal Academy. Luny exhibited several times at the academy between 1780 and 1793. About 1810 he suffered an attack of paralysis in both his feet and hands. Luny then settled in Teignmouth in Devonshire, where he continued to paint despite the physical difficulties until his death on September 30, 1837.
