Marquis de Lafayette

Remarks: Marie Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier de Lafayette was the son of a wealthy noble famly with a long tradition of military service. He joined the French army at the age of fourteen, but resigned six years later and came to America to offer his services to the revolutionary cause. He was commissioned a major general by the Continental Congress. He met George Washington and the two became lifelong friends. Lafayette was placed in command of the troops in Virginia. In 1779, he returned to France although he visited the U.S. in 1824-25 and was welcomed as a great hero. At this time he and his son George Washington Lafayette were elected Honorary Members of the Society.
