Lajos Kossuth
Date: Hungarian, 1802 - 1894
Remarks: After leading the failed Hungarian revolution of 1848, Louis Kossuth fled Hungary to embark on a seven-month tour of the United States to enlist support for Hungarian independence. He landed at Staten Island on December 5, 1851, where he was greeted with an elaborate procession and public reception. Kossuth left New York City to go on to Philadelphia on September 23rd, after a whirlwind of receptions and banquets. Even though his stay was short, it had a huge impact on the city, appearing in newspapers for a full month and influencing fashion and literature of the time.
