John Alsop King
Date: 1788 - 1867
Remarks: Son of Rufus King (1755-1827); brother of Charles and James G. King. As a politician, was allied in turn with the Democrats, Anti-Masons, National Republicans, Whigs and Republicans; served as New York legislator, congressman, and as Republican governor, 1857-59; served as an Officer during the war of 1812; Elected to state assembly during the 1820's; against slavery; 1856 became a member of the new republican party and was a successful candidate for New York govenor
