Date: 1780 - June 1848
Remarks: Fought on the American side in the War of 1812 when Black Hawk fought on the British side; also known as Watchful Fox; appointed chief of his nations by the American government even though the position was usually inherited; known as leader of the "Peace Band." Repeatedly sold tribal land to the U.S. for white settlement; fought in the Black Hawk Wars; eventually hated by his people because he sold off all the tribal land in Iowa to the U.S. government; He was likely poisoned by one of his tribe members; he is the only Native American honored with a bronze bust in the U.S. Capitol; his son succeeded him as chief of the Sauk and Mesquakie. A city and county in Iowa are named after him.
