John Wesley Jarvis
Date: 1780 - 1840
Remarks: Portrait and miniature painter, engraver, and sculptor. Jarvis emigrated to America with his family about 1785 and settled in Philadelphia. From 1796 to 1801John was apprenticed to the engraver Edward Savage. At the end of his apprenticeship he moved to NYC in 1813. In 1814 as apprentice he took Henry Inmann and later John Quidor also studied briefly in Jarvis's studio. Jarvis was the foremost portrait painter of New York during the first quarter of the 19th century.
