William James Hubard
Date: 1807 - 1862
Remarks: William James Hubard was a silhouettist, portrait painter, and scupltor. At an early age he developed a talent for cutting the likenesses of people out of paper, and was exploited as a child prodigy. His manager brought him from England to America in 1824. After only 3 years in New York City, Hubard broke away from his manager and gave up silhouettes for oil painting. Mr. Hubard spent time in Philadelphia and Baltimore, until he settled in Gloucester County, Virginia (1832). He later moved to Richmond, Virginia (1841) where he became interested in sculpture and established a foundry casting Bronzes.
