Remarks: Mayor of NY 1828, as mayor he was 1st to the city's gala reception in honor of the return visit of Lafayette and at the ceremonies celebrating the opening of the Erie canal; active in organization and development of the Whig party; well known as a diarist-he kept diary describing in great detail the NY scene, the diary was kept for 23 years and was later a manuscript published in 28 vols, which is owned by the Society, parts of the diary were also published in 2 vols edited by Bayard Tuckerman in 1889 and in 1927 a 2 vol edition was published by historian Alan Nevis
