Nathaniel Hawthorne

Remarks: famous 19th century American author, he penned "The Scarlet Letter" and "The House of Seven Gables"; part of literary circle of Alcott, Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Cranning; president Pierce appointed Hawthorne to consult at Liverpool, England; he spent 1858-1859 in Italy where he obtained the material for his "The Marble Faun" and his "Italian Notebooks"
