Edward Harkness
Date: 1874 - 1940
Remarks: Spent his life devoted to philanthropy due to the great fortunes he aquired from inheriting large bequests after the death of his mother Anna (Richardson) Harkness and his father who was one of the six shareholders in Standard Oil and partner of John D. Rockafeller Sr. He made large gifts to the New York Public Library, the Pilgrim Trust, and Philips Exeter Academy, Harvard and Yale Universities. His contributions made possible the creation of the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York. Advancement of Medical Science and child welfare were among his favorite interests.
