Charles Hanks

Remarks: Charles Stedman Hanks was the son of Rev. Stedham Hanks and Sarah (Hale) Hanks. He was educated at Harvard University and graduated from Boston Law school (1881). While pursiuing a career in law he became interested in railroad finaces. He married Miss Clarina Bartow Shumway (1857-1924) of, Chicago. The couple had two children Stedman Shumway Hanks (also known as, Colonel Stedman Hanks, New York Historical Society donor) and Clarina Shumway Hanks. During the administration of Theodore Roosevelt, he wrote a report about the excessive freight rates charged by the railroad industry. At a time when the government was investigating the rising cost of rail transportation. Mr. Hanks was an energetic sportsman and author of Camp Kits and Camplife, in 1906.
