John Hancock
Date: 1737 - 1793
Remarks: John Hancock, Governor of Massachusetts from 1780 to 1785 and again from 1787 to1793, began his career as a merchant. However when the English placed harsh restrictions on the colonies and even confiscated one of his ships, Hancock became a strong opponent of the crown and turned to politics instead. He served as a member and later president of the Continental Congress and in 1776, was the first person to sign the Declaration of Independence. ¿ Source:
