Horatio Gates
Date: 1728/9–1806
Remarks: Although Gates was a major in the British army he joined the cause of the Colonies when the revolution broke out and was given the rank of brigadier general in the Continental Army. He was defeated by his former commander, Cornwallis, at Camden, South Carolina, 1780. He retired for two years, and later rejoined Washington's staff for the remaining year of the war. In 1790 he freed his slaves, sold his plantation, and moved to New York. In 1800-01 Gates served in the state legislature.
