James Gallatin

Remarks: James Gallatin was the eldest son of Albert Gallatin (1761-1849), a distinguished politician, diplomat, businessman, and ninth president of the N-YHS (1843-1849) . He was the brother of Albert Gallatin. Mr. Gallatin worked as his father's secretary while he was on diplomatic assignment in Russia, London, and Paris. He and his brother, with the financial support of William Backhouse Astor and their father, founded Gallatin Brothers, a stock-trading firm. When his father retired he served as president of Gallatin Bank. In 1868, he retired from business and moved to Europe.
