Ulysses S. Grant
Date: 1822 - 1885
Remarks: Ulysses S. Grant became famous as a Union general during the Civil War. His victory at Vicksburg helped weaken the South and ultimately it was to Grant that Robert E. Lee surrendered, having been successfully pinned in by the Union general's manuevers. As president, Grant was not quite as skilled and often found himself in trouble for accepting lavish gifts. He was nonetheless reelected in 1872. After leaving office he became a partner in a financial firm. Ill with throat cancer towards the end of his life, he wrote his memoirs to raise enough money to support his family after his death. He was able to complete the last page just before his death on July 23, 1885. -Source:
