Remarks: George III, who took the throne in 1760, was a very cultured monarch with a strong sense of duty. He was interested in books, music, science, painting, and agriculture; and with his wife, Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, had fifteen children. In 1768, founded the Royal Academy of Arts and also built what is today known as Buckingham Palace. He most known for, however, his being king during the American War of Indepence. George, the first Hanover King to be born in England, was plagued with an illness that eventually left him deaf, blind and completely mad.
