Davy Crockett
Date: 1786–1836
Remarks: Davy Crockett, a frontiersman who for many is the epitome of the American West, received no more than 100 days of schooling in his entire life. Crockett, however, grew up to serve in the Tennessee state legislature as well as the House of Representatives for three terms. Between the 1822 and 1823 sessions for the state legislature, legend has it Crockett killed 105 bears. In 1835, after losing reelection for the House, Crockett traveled to Texas, where he lost his life in defense of the Alamo. His motto was simply, "First make sure you're right, then go ahead". -Source: and
