Francis Cotes
Date: 1726 - 1770
Remarks: Cotes began his career as a pastel portraitist working in that medium until the early 1760s. During that period he was influenced by his master, George Knapton, but later works reveal a familiarity with the newer modes of Joshua Reynolds. Cotes maintained a fashionable studio in London's Cavendish Square where he attracted many of the major portrait commissions of the 1760s.
