William Cosby

Remarks: William Cosby was the son of Alexander Cosby and Elizabeth (L'Estrange) Cosby. His parents were members of an influential Irish family. He married Miss Grace Montague, sister to the second Earl of Halifax. Sir Cosby served in the British army as an officer. Soon after, he became governor of the Island of Minorca, and later, he governed the Leeward Islands. Governor Cosby was then appointed to the colonies of the Jerseys and New York, in 1731. He suffered many personal and administrative problems while in office. Upon his death the colonies were separated.
