John Singleton Copley
Date: 1738 - 1815
Remarks: John Singleton Copley, born in Boston, MA, to Irish parents, began painting around 1753. His pieces were most often portraits of well-to-do Bostonians, as well as history paintings. It soon became clear that he was perhaps the finest American colonial painter. Copley expressed a desire to also be known in Europe and in 1766 sent a piece of his to London for inspection. On the invitation of expatriate American artist Benjamin West, who loved the piece he had sent, Copley traveled to London where he lived and worked until his death in 1815. -Source:
