John C. Calhoun
Date: 1782 - 1850
Remarks: Studied law at Yale in 1804, three years later he began practicing law in SC. He was elected to Congress in 1810 and was a strong advocate for war with Britian. In 1817, he became Secretary of War under President Monroe for 7 years. Elected Vice President of U.S. under John Quincy Adams in 1824 and again in 1828 under Andrew Jackson. He was a spokesman for the southern states against federal tarif laws. Secretary of State under President Tyler but returned to Senate in 1845 where he served until his death
