William Frederick Cody
Date: 1846 - 1917
Remarks: William Frederick Cody, known as Buffalo Bill, was born in Iowa on February 26, 1846, and was raised in Kansas. Cody was left to provide for his family at the age of eleven and earned his living working for the railroad, the pony express, scouting for the army, as well as hunting buffalo. Soon stories were passed along of his adventures and in 1872, Cody entered show business on the suggestion of a friend. He organized the Wild West Show, and brought tales of his exploits across the country and even to Europe. Cody was viewed as a true frontiersman and came to represent the American West around the world. Although he passed away in 1917, his legacy was perserved by cheap novels that told his stories. -Source: http://www.bbhc.org/bbm/biographyBB.cfm and http://www.bartleby.com/65/bu/BuffaloB.html
