DeWitt Clinton

Remarks: DeWitt Clinton was the son of James Clinton, brother of New York Governor George Clinton (1739-1812). He married Miss Maria Franklin (1775-1818). The couple had ten children, among them were: Charles Alexander Clinton (1798-1861), Julianna Clinton (b. 1871), and Julian Catherine Clinton (1817-1839). As a U.S. Senator he introduced the 12th Amendment to the Constitution. He served as Mayor of NYC, Governor of NY, President of American Academy of Art, 3rd president of N-YHS. Mr. Clinton is best remembered for promotion of Erie Canal system that connected the Hudson River to lake Erie. He died while surviving as Governor of New York State.
