John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough
Date: May 26, 1650 - June 16, 1722
John Churchill
Remarks: first Duke of Marlborough; appointed to the household of the Duke of York at seventeen; joined the Navy and fought in the Anglo-Dutch Wars; head of the Loyalist troops during the rebellions against James II, but soon joined the Orange side instead, the rest of the Army soon joined him; William of Orange appointed him Earl of Marlborough as a thanks for his support; Churchill served as Governor of the Hudson's Bay Company; fought in the War of Spanish Succession; Fighting in France led to Queen Anne granting him the title of Duke; his descendents include Winston Churchill, Diana, Princess of Wales, Lady Diana Spencer and Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire.
