Isaac Chauncey
Date: 1772 - 1840
Remarks: Commodore Isaac Chauncey entered the merchant marine at an early age, and was captian of a ship by the age of nineteen. In 1798 he was commissioned as a lieutenant in the new U.S. Navy. He saw action in Tripoli (1802-1805), served as commander of naval forces on Lake Erie and Ontario during the War of 1812, and and commanded the mediterranean Squadron (1816-18). He later served on the Board of navy Commissioners and was commandant of the New York Navy Yard.
