Baroness Charette

Remarks: She was the daughter of ColonelmAndrew J. Polk of the Confederate Army and Rebecca (Van Leer) Polk. She was born at her families home, Ashwood Hall. Her father was wounded in the Civil war and them went to live in France. In 1877, Antoinette married Baron Athanase de Charette de la Contrie (1832-1911). The couple was married in Paris and lived at Chateaunent-d'Ille-et-Vilaine, near Paris. The Baron, who later became a Marquis, was commander of a division of the French Army and of the Pontifical Zouaves in Italy in the war with Giribaldi.
