Samuel de Champlain
Date: 1567 - 1635
Remarks: Samuel De Champlain, who learned to navigate and chart at an early age, participated in a number of expeditions to the area surrounding the St. Lawrence River. He explored and charted the coast of New England from Maine to Massachusetts, set up colonies and a fur trade, aided local Indians in the fight for peace, and also discovered and named Lake Champlain. With his help, New France was expanded to include lands as far west as Wisconson. He died in Quebec in 1635. -Source:
