George Catlin
Date: 1796 - 1872
Remarks: Educated as a lawyer, George Catlin began painting as a hobby, creating portraits of politicians. In 1824, he devoted himself entirely to studying and painting Native American life and culture, a subject that had fascinated him since childhood. Catlin spent almost a decade traveling around the plains, sketching and painting. His work provides a rare record of life west of the Mississippi before white settlers moved into the area. -Source: and
