Frances Bryant
Date: 1797 - 1865
Remarks: She was the daughter of a prosperous farmer, was married to William Cullen Bryant in 1821. It proved to be a felicitous marriage, and she was the mistress of the Bryant household in NY from the time her husband's work took him there in 1826 until her death, and as such a hostess to the most distinguished literary, artistic, and political personages of the mid-19th century. After her death, Bryant wrote to his daughters: "I never wrote a poem I did not repeat to her, and take her judgement upon it. I found its success with the public to be precisely in proportion to the impression it made upon her. She loved my verses, and judged them kindly, but did not like them all equally well."
