John Brown
Date: 1800 - 1859
Remarks: Abolitionist who joined the free-soil vs. slave-interest fight in Kansas, in 1855, and earned the nickname "Brown of Osawatomie" after he and his sons led a murderous guerrilla attack on a pro-slave settlement in reprisal for the sack of Lawrence, Kansas, in May 1856; on Oct. 16, 1859, he led a band of 21 men in a raid on Harper's Ferry, Viriginia, during which he seized the U.S. armory there; he was subsequently hanged for treason on Dec. 2, 1859.
