George Augustus Baker
Date: 1821–1880
Remarks: Before becoming a portrait painter, Baker worked as a miniaturist in his native New York City. By the time he returned from a trip to Italy in 1846, however, he had gone on to full-size portraits. Baker exhibited his work for the first time at the National Academy of Design in 1838; he was made an associate of the Academy in 1844, and was elected to full membership in 1852.
