George Wesley Bellows
Date: 1882–1925
Remarks: Came to New York to study painting with Robert Henri at the Arts Students League where Bellows eventually became an instructor in 1910. Although he never actually became one of "the Eight", the group which was then effecting a revolution in American painting with its cityscapes and so-called Ashcan subjects", he became a close friend of such men as Sloan, Glackens, Luks, and Shim. Bellows also took the scenes of city life as his favorite subject. He also enjoyed painting the atmosphere, violence, and color of boxing matches
