Frederick A. Butman
Date: American, 1820 - 1871
Remarks: In 1849, he opened an apothecary shop in Gardiner, Maine where he established a local reputation as a painter. He acquired the firm of Kellogg and Van de Water as a patron, and in 1860, the firm financed his travels throough California and Oregon in search of pictorial material. Over the next 10 years, he exhibits at various places throughout the U.S., including the Brooklyn Art Association, the Pennsylvania Academy, the Fifth Avenue Art Gallery, etc. In 1869, he spends the summer in Europe on a sketching tour.
