Mrs. William Axtell
Date: 1728 - 1780
Remarks: first name Margaretta. Daughter of Abraham de Peyster, Jr. (of the influential de Peyster family) and wife to William Axtell (son of Major Daniel Axtell). She married in 1747. Her husband owned a lot of land in New Jersey and Long Island. They had a mansion on Broadway and a country home in Flatbush. William was a member of the King's Council, a Loyalist, and a colonel of corps of New York Tories during the Revolution. Margaretta was buried in Trinity Church on Wall St. A portrait of her by John Wollaston is a companion to one of her husband.
