Mary D. Astor

Remarks: She was the daughter of James W. Paul of Philadelphia and niece of John A. B. Dahlgren. She was raised in Philadelphia and married William Waldorf Astor of NY in 1878. The couple lived in NY until 1882 when Mr. Astor was appointed American Minister to Italy, a post he held for 3 years. In 1890, the Astors moved to England. Mrs. Astor was a leader of society in NY, Rome, and London and was active in charity work. The Astors had three sons and two daughters
