Remarks: Viscountess Bryce was the second daughter of Thomas Ashton and Elizabeth (Gair) Ashton of Cheshire, England. She was of American descent on her mother's side. In 1889, she married James Bryce, (1838-1922), the historian and author who created Viscount Bryce of Dechmont in 1914. Bryce was the British Ambassador to the U.S. from 1907 to 1913. The couple lived in Washington, DC at this time. After this period of time Lady Bryce continued to visit the U.S. in connection with the English Speaking Union, she was Chairman of its common interests committee.
