Chester A. Arthur
Date: 1829 - 1886
Remarks: Chester Alan Arthur, educated at Union College and a lawyer with his own practice, rose through New York politics to become James Garfield's Vice-President in 1880. However in July of 1881, Garfield was shot, making Arthur the 21st President of the United States. Arthur succeeded in running an honest and responsible administration during his three years as president. However, the Republicans did not vote him past the primaries in the 1884 election and he returned to practicing law before his death in 1886. - Source: http://gi.grolier.com/presidents/ea/bios/21parth.html
