Mrs. John Anderson
Date: 1798
Remarks: Mrs. John Anderson was the first person to give art lessons to her son Alexander. As he recalled, "my brother and myself...were under the rigid government of my mother whose talents enabled her to give us some instructions. For want of ink she would dissolve indigo in water and the drawings of faces and flowers made their appearance and amused us during the evenings." She died during the yellow fever epidemic of 1798.
