Hans Christian Andersen
Date: April 2, 1805 - August 4, 1875
Remarks: Hans Christian Andersen was born in Odense, Denmark to a washerwoman and a poor shoemaker. Andersen had very little schooling until he was older, although he was trained to be a dancer, actor and singer. After graduating from Copenhagen University in the late 1820's, Andersen travelled widely and published many accounts of his journeys. However he is most known for his fairy tales such as "The Ugly Duckling", "The Emperor's New Clothes" and "The Little Mermaid", that use a unique style meant for both children and adults. Until his death in 1875, Andersen continued to write fairy tales, plays, poems, personal accounts, as well as an autobiography. - Source:
