Joseph Alexander Ames

Remarks: Born in Boston in 1816, Ames followed a career as a portraitist between 1841 and 1847. The following year he went to Italy, where he executed a portrait of Pope Pius IX. He painted many prominent figures of his day and exhibited frequently at the Boston Athenaeum, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the National Academy of Design.
