A descendant of Abraham Rycken who came from Holland to settle at Bowery Bay, Long Island, in 1638, the subject was the son of John Lawrence and Lavinia (Smith) Riker. He practiced law in New York and served as district attorney for Westchester and Queens counties from 1802 to 1812, and beginning in the latter year served two decades as recorder of the City of New York. Riker's Island in the East River bears the family name. His portrait was a gift to the Society from his great-grandson.
