Nicholas Fish enlisted as a lieutenant in the Continental Army and by the end of Revolutionary War had risen to the rank of lieutenant colonel. He later became president of the New York Society of the Cincinnati. He was a friend of George Washington, Lafayette and Alexander Hamilton, and served as executor of the latter's estate. This portrait is based on an original exhibited by Henry Inman at the National Academy of Design in 1829.
