John Singleton Copley, Jr., son of the famous American painter, was born in Boston and lived in England from the age of three. He became a jurist and later a member of Parliament; in 1819 he was named solicitor general and was knighted. He became attorney general in 1824, was raised to the peerage as Lord Lyndhurst in 1827, and served three times as lord chancellor (1827-30, 1834-35, and 1841-46). Osgood must have painted this portrait between 1835 and 1839, years he spent in Europe.
