Rufus Prime (1806-85), for whom this study was painted, was a son of Nathaniel I. Prime (1768-1840), the original owner of the Hell Gate property whose country residence stood between 88th and 89th streets. Miller rendered a companion view of this property in November 1854 which is also in the Society's collection (1943.488). Rufus Prime's address from 1846 to 1854 was listed at 113 (later 147) West 14th Street, New York City.
