Description: Wrought and seamed silver tobacco box; ovoid box with straight sides and ogee ends; stepped base with an applied molded band below the straight sides; hinged, stepped lid with an applied molded rim, and applied convex sides; engraved on the lid, "Jere..h Van Rensselaer" in script; engraved on the base, "Presented To/ Philip S Van Rensselaer" in script; engraved inside the lid, "Presented to/ William Stephen Van Rensselaer/ 1886-1930" in script; maker's marks stamped inside the box.

This snuffbox was made for Jeremiah Van Rensselaer (1705-1745) of Albany, NY. It descended to his nephew, Philip Schuyler Van Rensselaer (1767-1824) and then to his great-great-nephew William Stephen Van Rensselaer (1886-1930), the brother of the donor.
