Description: Medium blue wool New York militia trousers with 1 1/2" black stripe down the side of each leg; 6 button fly with a fabric tab which extends to the left and fastens to a button on the inside, 6 buttons around the outside of the waistband, diagonal slit pockets at the front at each hip, right side horizontal slit watch pocket; 2 straps on the back beneath the waistband, straps fasten at the center to rectangular metal buckle with double-tongued chape; 2 horizontal slit rear pockets; waist and pockets lined with cotton.

These trousers are part of a uniform worn by Samuel Verplanck Hoffman (1842-1887), who served with Company K, 7th Regiment, New York National Guard. Hoffman was a member of the Society, and in 1903 succeeded his father as its president.
